Questions about house painting with insulating paint

Question: What is the "R" value?
Answer: R-values are measured by testing laboratories who use, ASTM (American Society of Testing and Materials) procedures. Existing test procedures require that the sample submitted be 1" thick therefore paints and coatings cannot be tested using established test methods. We just do our egg test to prove how effective the barrier is and let our customers draw his or her own conclusions.

Question: How much paint do I need?
Answer: Remember that you need a base coat of radiant barrier for each coat. You can figure that the average spread rate is 250 sq. ft per U.S. gallon over a fairly smooth surface. If you are painting over a rough rather than smooth surface, DOUBLE the amount of paint. Your actual spread rate may vary depending on the surface  porosity of the material and losses when mixing.

Question: What colors are available?

Answer: All our ready mixed paints come to you in a bright white, tintable base only. You can have the paints tinted locally to the color of your choosing in pastel and mid range colors. Our paints will accept all universal tints. Any store that tints paint can give you the color of your choice.

Question: What brand of paint should I use?

Answer: Choose either the flat or the latex, whichever fits your needs.  Don't forget to use the Radiant Barrier first!

Question: How many coats of paint do I need?
Answer: You must use the silver base coat (radiant barrier) and then you can apply a single layer of Therm-a-Guard to insure good distribution of the ceramics.

Question: Can I use Insulating paint inside and outside?
Answer: Yes! It is best to use Insulating paints both inside and out, however either application alone will increase your energy efficiency! We recommend Satin finish for exterior but flat will do.

Question: Are there any harmful chemicals in the paint?
Answer: Therma-Guard is free of all Volatile chemicals and toxins and is recognized as safe ("GRAS"), under the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. Non-toxic, odor free, and environmentally friendly.

Question: Can I use it to paint my attic?
Answer: Absolutely! We cannot represent that you need no insulation in your attic, but by restricting the amount of heat allowed into your attic may need less or make your existing insulation making it more effective.

Question: Can it be sprayed?

Answer: Yes! Simply remove all filters from your spray equipment and use a slightly larger spray tip than normal. Recommended tip sizes are .019 - .025.

Question: Can we guarantee you will save any specific amount on your heating or cooling bills?
Answer: Of course not and anyone that tells you they can is not telling the truth. The results depend also on to how many areas of your home you apply the paint, how well vented your attic is, how many leaks there are around windows and doors, the type of roofing materials, and a lot of other things. We can guarantee you that for the ~ 72 cents per sq ft cost of Therma-Guard paint you will not find a better solution to your high utility bills for that price.

Question: Does your insulating paint work in winter months?
Answer: Yes! The heat inside your home wants to escape toward the cold outside air! A paint film with Therma-Guard reflective ceramics will help keep your heat inside by dramatically slowing the heat losses.

Question: Do ceramics keep the paint from breathing?

Answer: A paint coatings ability to breath is determined by the rate that water or vapor will pass through a membrane. Ceramic filled paints do not restrict a paint coatings ability to "breath.
